About CPI
Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary has established The Catholic Preaching Institute to usher in a homiletic revival in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. We aim to transform the experience of homilies into a graced encounter with the God who continues to speak that saving Word to all in today’s world!
VISION
The Institute aims to unleash the compelling power of the Word for preachers and parishioners alike, thereby initiating a much-needed homiletic revival in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
MISSION
Through a multi-faceted approach, the Institute will transform the experience of preaching into a beneficial encounter with the Word of God, leading people closer to Christ through enhanced participation in parish liturgical life.
DISTINCTION
By engaging exemplary clergy, seminary faculty, and lay faithful, and by leveraging new forms of digital communications, the Institute will enable participants to see how preaching can be compelling (through research), to judge how to make preaching more compelling (through pedagogy and formation), and to act as witnesses to compelling preaching (through outreach).

Lilly Endowment
The Compelling Preaching Initiative — funded by Lilly Endowment Inc. — is designed to foster more compelling preaching by cultivating practices among aspiring and active preachers that would help them to proclaim the Christian gospel to diverse audiences in more engaging and effective ways.
Hosted by the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship, the coordination program supports the Compelling Preaching Initiative by convening conferences for mutual learning among grantees, finding expertise needed for the flourishing of their programs, and disseminating the work of participating organizations to wider audiences.
